“Though Silvia Tro Santafé is no newcomer in the recording stakes this was my first encounter with her and this recital has definitely whetted the appetite for more.”

Silvia Tro Santafé plays on her native credentials with her Spanish Heroines, as portrayed by Rossini, Mozart, Donizetti. Verdi ,Bizet and Massenet. She hails from Valencia, whence perhaps the generous dash of tangy orange in a timbre, which, coupled with idiosyncratic French, evokes two bigger-hitting mezzos from more eastern climes – Baltsa and Obraztsova. Tro Santafé exudes energy and spirit, but Rosina’s coloratura is sketchy, Eboli and Chimène are underweight, Carmem amd Dulcinée lack seduction and some big moments go off-pitch. Best of the bunch are her Léonore (La favorite) and slightly unexpected, her Donna Elvira. Under Julian Reynolds the Orquestra Sinfónica de Navarra – the longestestablished in Spain – provides alert, zappy accompaniment.
