John Potter
John Potter's musical activities have taken him into many styles and
periods. Through more than eighty recordings, he is best known for his
performances of Renaissance and Baroque music, but he is also very much
involved in contemporary music. Many composers have written works for him,
and he has premiered works by Berio, Stockhausen and other leading
contemporary figures. He was a member of Swingle II and a co-founder of
Electric Phoenix; is now a member of the Hilliard Ensemble and Red Byrd;
and has recorded for ECM, EMI, Hyperion, Harmonia Mundi, Teldec, Saydisc
and CPO. Recent recordings with both the Hilliard Ensemble and the Dufay
Collective have featured in the classical charts. His book Vocal Authority
has been published by Cambridge University Press, and he has become a
lecturer at York University.
