Hausmusik London was founded in 1986 to perform the chamber repertoire
of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and was the first British
chamber ensemble to perform Romantic music on period instruments. Since
1989 Hausmusik London has appeared regularly on the BBC, at the Wigmore
Hall and the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, as well as in numerous
festivals in Britain and on the Continent.
Hausmusik has toured the Mendelssohn and Schubert Octets throughout
Europe, scoring notable successes at the Berlin Bachtage and the Festival
Escorial (Spain).
Recent tours have taken the group all over England, including to the
Aldeburgh Easter Festival, and to the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn as 'Musical
Ambassadors' of Great Britain in a performance of the Beethoven Septet
supported by the British Embassy and the British Council in Germany. In
1997 the ensemble appeared at Brahms and Schubert celebrations at the
Wigmore Hall, BBC Proms, Musikfest Bremen, Bath Mozartfest and Cambridge
Schubertfest. 1998 included concerts at Prague Spring Festival, Stockholm
City of Culture, Berlin Schauspielhaus 'Goethe-project', Bath Mozartfest
and a tour of the Netherlands.
Hausmusik London has been filmed for BBC television and in 1993 was
featured in a seven-programme chamber music series on BBC Radio 3, which
was presented by the group's clarinettist, Antony Pay. The group has also
broadcast on German and Flemish radio.
Monica Huggett (violin) is a graduate of the Royal Academy of
Music and is an internationally-known soloist, recording artist and
leader/director, receiving acclaim for her concerto performances with
leading period-instrument orchestras and her chamber music concerts with
Trio Sonnerie. Monica Huggett is director of the Portland Baroque
Orchestra (Oregon, USA).
Pavlo Beznosiuk (violin) studied with David Takeno at the
Guildhall School of Music. He is well-known for his work as a
concertmaster and soloist, and has travelled all over the world leading
such groups as the New London Consort, The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and
the Academy of Ancient Music. His recordings include Violin Concertos by
Vivaldi, all Bach's Brandenburg Concerti and virtuoso music by Walther and
Westhoff.
Roger Chase (viola) is a frequent recitalist, having made his
debut as a soloist in the 1987 Proms and as a recording artist performing
the solo viola repertoire of Mozart and Britten. He is frequently featured
on live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and has played viola solos on several
television soundtracks and as a member of Esterhazy Baryton Trio, Nash
Ensemble and London Sinfonietta.
Richard Lester ('cello) was a prize-winner at the Scheveningen
International Cello Competition in 1987 and is principal cello and soloist
with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, performing with Claudio Abbado in
New York, Vienna and Berlin. He has recorded the complete Mendelssohn
works for cello and piano (with Susan Tomes), was a member of the piano
quartet Domus and is cellist of the Florestan Trio.
Antony Pay (clarinet) studied at the Royal Academy of Music and
read mathematics at Cambridge University. He was principal clarinettist of
the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta (of which he was a
founding member), and Academy of St.Martin in the Fields, as well as a
member of the Nash Ensemble and the Tuckwell Wind Quintet. He now
concentrates on solo playing and conducting and has recorded the Spohr and
Mozart concertos as well as numerous chamber works.
Guest Artists
Jeremy Williams (viola) studied at Wells Cathedral School and
the Guildhall School of Music with David Takeno. He was a member of the
Delmé String Quartet and the Nash Ensemble, and in 1988 formed the York
Piano Trio. He has also appeared as a guest with the Lindsay String
Quartet. He is currently principal viola of the Hong Kong Philharmonic
Orchestra.
David Watkin ('cello) studied at St Catherine's College,
Cambridge, and was a finalist in the Shell LSO Competition in 1984. He has
just recorded his first solo CD for Hyperion and will shortly make his
debut recording with pianist Howard Moody for Chandos (Beethoven sonatas).
He is principal cello of L'Orchestre Révolutionaire et Romantique,
English Baroque Soloists, and The Academy of Ancient Music. |
