Alexander
Mason was born in Cheltenham in 1974, his early musical training taking
place at Gloucester Cathedral, first as a chorister and then as organ
scholar. He studied interpretation with David Sanger whilst organ scholar
at Worcester College, Oxford and subsequently studied improvisation with
Jos van der Kooy at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague. He was supported by
generous awards from the Countess of Munster, Ian Fleming and Eric
Thompson trusts.
Alexander became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists aged 18,
winning three prizes, and was runner-up four years later in the Tournemire
prize for improvisation at the St Alban's International Organ Festival. In
2001 Alexander won the Grand Prix for Improvisation at the Andre Marchal
Organ Competition in Biaritz, and the jury prize for the best improvised
Theme and Variations.
Alexander has performed as a recitalist all over the UK, Ireland,
Norway and Lebanon. He has broadcast on BBC Radio 3 with the choirs of
Guildford Cathedral and St Bride's, Fleet Street, and has recorded for the
BBC's sit-com The Vicar of Dibley and Channel 4 television's Howard
Goodall's Organ Works. He is currently the Director of Music at All
Saints' Parish Church, Fulham.
